Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) The Difficult Lesson

Abstract. By the end of Franco’s regime and the early years of the democratic restoration, various attempts were made in Spain to renew the teaching of history. One of them was led by the «Història 13-16» (History 13-16) group, aimed at teaching history in secondary education using its analytical method. A project first originated in England. The present work is the very first one to study the history of the so-called «13 to 16 group», the singularity of its project and the stuff they created. It also analyses the impact and the effects it produced on the teaching of history, both in the class rooms and on formal aspects, such as text books, education reform, other attempts, etc. This framework allows us to identify what is left of such a relevant experience thirty years later, and to analyse the causes and reasons that have made it possible.
